Operating the grid at its full capacity

Energy flow through the grid can be increased and reserve capacity integrated using FACTS and HVDC technology

Delivering more electrical power to consumers may require the installation of new transmission lines. But the capacity of existing lines can be significantly increased by using flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS). FACTS devices adjust physical parameters of the lines for maximum power (series compensation). They also absorb excess energy from disturbances and inject power into the system to stabilize the grid (shunt compensation).

In some cases, system capacity can be more than doubled by these devices. ABB has pioneered FACTS technology and delivered more than 700 systems worldwide, more than any other supplier.

Making full use of installed capacity also includes the interconnection of neighbouring grids enabling them to share reserves. To bridge long distances, cross water or connect asynchronous grids, high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology is required.

ABB has been designing and building HVDC systems for more than 50 years. In that time it has pioneered breakthrough technologies and supplied more than half of the world’s HVDC projects – a unique achievement that gives ABB an unrivalled base of experience.
